While the old SAT was scored using a very general holistic rubric, the new SAT essay is evaluated based on three specific criteria: Reading, Analysis, and Writing. Each of these criteria will be scored on a scale of 2-8 by two different markers, for a total score of 6-24.
Below is a breakdown of what each of these criteria means:
Reading: You must prove that you read and understood the reading. The only way to prove that you understood all the nuances of the reading is to quote pieces of it effectively in your essay.
Analysis: You must prove you can analyze the author’s arguments, and use this analysis to craft an argument of your own about the author’s rhetorical methods. You must come up with interesting, supportable claims and select strong, relevant evidence to support your claims.
Writing: You must prove you can not only come up with an insightful and thorough analysis, but can also effectively convey your analysis clearly and persuasively to your reader. The markers will evaluate your ability to come up with a coherent organization, varied sentence structures, striking word choice, and a formal, sophisticated tone.
