写作考察了一篇环保类题材的文章,选自Godfrey Harris和Daniel Stiles的The Wrong Way to Protect Elephants。读懂这篇文章比较简单,没有出现太多生词,但是因为其结构上难以捉摸,所以对于文章的总结有困难,比较具有挑战性。本文为大家分享的是这次考试的写作范文。

Illegal ivory poaching and trading have always been deemed the main cause of diminishing elephant population, and governments have launched various rules and regulations in an attempt to curb this trend. But can all those well-meaning policies really make a different? Not exactly. In Godfrey Harris and Daniel Stiles’ “The Wrong Way to Protect Elephants”, they make a case against the new American regulations of ivory and proposed several new measures. Parallel structure, a detailed story and examples all contribute to the persuasive powerof this article.

To begin with, the authors utilize parallelism not only to add an esthetic symmetry to the ideas expressed, but also emphasize the prevalent inconvenience that will no doubt result from the implementation of those new ivory regulations. In Paragraph 8 they mention that neither “an Edwardian bracelet inherited from a grandmother” nor “an ivory-handled Georgian silver tea set”could be allowed to be shipped or sold without proving that it’s at least acentury old, having endured no reparation or modification with ivory since 1973 and have reached the United States by one of the 13 ports. Up on reading this, the readers can easily grasp how difficult it will be for them to transport andtrade any ivory product because of those extremely strict requirements. This parallel structure, at first glance, seems to dramatize the restrictions posedon anyone in possession of an ivory item; however, there is no exaggeration at all. Every bit the authors tell is true: those restrictions are clearly writtenin new regulations. Therefore, readers could realize that any one of them, as long as they have certain ivory items, are very likely to render themselves in such difficulties someday. Hence, they could surely identify with the possible troubles and be unwilling to endorse such regulations.

In case the audience may not fully appreciatethe trouble incurred by such regulations, a classic victim of new ivory regulations— an oldest known upright Steinway —— is presented to demonstrate the author’s view. By a detailed account of how this piano migratedto Japan and since then found it impossible to migrate its way back to America for the owner’ failure to “obtain the required export permit identifying theivory keys…” this story illustrates how difficult is it to prepare those exhaustive paperwork and how stringent and inflexible those regulations are.Still, the story sounds nearly ridiculous: why can’t a person send a piano back to the hands of a friend in America? Yet according to those ivory regulations,he just can’t; and this piece of antique is still stuck in Japan. This seemingly absurd yet one hundred percent true story again reminds readers the problematic nature of those regulations and elicits their empathy toward this piece of antique still stranded in a strange land, and thereby stirring their dissatisfaction with those ivory regulations.

Finally, the authors propose another approach to address illegal ivory poaching and trading, the most typical of which is to “figure out a way to manage the trade in rawivory to protect elephants.” A contrast of examples was given to illustrate the merit in this approach: several years ago a United Nations-approved auction of ivory with its proceeds went to conserve elephant while America simply destroyed six tons of ivory last fall. By virtue of this contrast, the advantage of new approach is apparent: it could not only undercut illegal ivory trafficking and yield abundant economic gains to continue protecting elephants, but at the same time still preserve the precious ivory. American’s regulations,on the contrary, seem too blunt and too lacking in serous deliberation to doany good to any party. No doubt readers would immediately understand how deflective those current regulations are and how urgent American need to consider new ways to protect elephants.

In conclusion, it is through the crafty use of parallelism, story and examples that this article has obtained so much strength and persuasiveness.
