相信很多在本科阶段学习数学专业的学生，到申请研究生的时候，有着这样的疑惑：到底是要申请数学呢，还是应用数学，或者有些学校专业名为计算数学?那我们这边就以普林斯顿大学为例，给大家分析一下美国研究生阶段，数学专业的开设情况。

　　首先普林斯顿大学是美国一所私立研究型大学，位于美国新泽西州的普林斯顿，八所常春藤盟校之一。在2016USNEWS排名中，普林斯顿大学综合排名第一，同时研究生数学专业排名也和麻省理工大学(MIT)共同并列第一。普林斯顿大学具有两个和数学相关的专业，一个属于Departmentof Mathematics，另一个在Programin Applied and Computational Mathematics下。

　　普林斯顿的数学系和其他的数学top院校相比，从第一年开始就更加注重学生的独立研究。在2015-16学年，该系共有64名教职员工，17名访问学者或研究员，62名在读博士生。

　　而另外一个Programin Applied and Computational Mathematics(PACM)是一个跨学科和跨部门的项目，主要研究方向为数学及其在科学和工程领域的应用，包括数值分析和其他计算方法。在2015-16学年，共有52名来自不同部门的教授，34名在读博士生。

　　“PACM (theProgram in Applied and Computational Mathematics) is an interdisciplinary andinterdepartmental program that provides a home for people from many fields anddirections, who share a passion for mathematics and its applications. TheProgram in Applied and Computational Mathematics offers a select group ofhighly qualified students the opportunity to obtain a thorough knowledge ofbranches of mathematics indispensable to science and engineering applications,including numerical analysis and other computational methods. “

         从研究领域的对比，我们可以发现，数学院下的数学专业更加偏重于理论研究，比如一些代数几何学、分析等；而应用和计算数学专业，更加偏重于实际的应用，以及和其他领域的一个结合，包括和信号、计算物理等各个其他方向。   接着我们再看一下申请要求的区别：
